Bluegen BG15

The Bluegen BG15 from Solid Power is a combined heat and power unit (CHP) that generates both electricity and heat with a solid fuel cell. It is the next development of the previous Bluegen, which has been on the market for several years.

The compact device has an electrical power of 1.5 kilowatts. Thus it can generate up to 13,000 kilowatt hours of electricity with an electrical efficiency of 55 percent if it runs through almost the entire year. The device is designed for continuous operation. In combination with a photovoltaic system, however, it can stop working during the summer months and does not consume any fuel during this time. The Bluegen BG15 is still running on natural gas or bio natural gas (methane). Direct operation with hydrogen is not yet foreseen. A reformer converts the natural gas into hydrogen. This also releases carbon dioxide. But the emission of the greenhouse gas is substantially smaller than with a BHKW with burn engine.

Overall efficiency: 88 percent

This results in less waste heat. However, the 0.85 kilowatt thermal output can still be used for water heating or for heating the rooms in the building. In addition, the device recovers the heat from the flue gas via a heat exchanger. In this way, the Bluegen BG15 achieves an overall efficiency of up to 88 percent.

If the heat requirement exceeds the production of the Bluegen BG15, an additional heat source is provided which could have been switched off by then. The Bluegen BG15 is able to communicate smoothly with photovoltaic systems, solar thermal systems or heat pumps. It also has an automatic start-stop function so that the device does not have to be put into operation manually. The manufacturer also guarantees remote monitoring around the clock. The homeowner can control the device via the Internet or a smartphone app.

For installation, the homeowner needs a free floor space of 55 x 80 centimetres in the basement. The height of the BHKW amounts to 1.2 meters.
